It was in June of 2021 when Makenzi lost her life outside the Far East Community Center. Makenzi was hit in the neck by a bullet."Our kids matter and they should be able to go out in a park and play," Ridley said.. Through the non-profit's scholarship fund, the organization helps to provide young, disadvantaged kids with the financial support they need to attend college or the skills and mentoring needed to start out in business on their own as entrepreneurs.
Ridley told ABC 6 that the hole in her heart will never be filled, but knowing Makenzi's legacy of love will continue on through the foundation is what keeps her going. June not only marks three years since Makenzi's death, it's also dubbed as National Gun Violence Awareness Month. Makenzi's mother told ABC 6 that she will continued to use her death as a call to action, telling her personal story in the push to stop gun violence.
