Brigstocke feels he’s lucky to be part of a generation who didn’t encounter the “bottomless pit” of internet porn until they were in early adulthood. Knowing how porn altered his own sexual tastes, he worries about how extreme content can sculpt early minds and desires. But he’s also done his research on that and “learned that the dopamine flood you experience in response to extreme imagery is something you can recover from at any age”. He says the detox from porn takes months, but then “you can start to be in the world and enjoy the simple things again. I’ve quit it in all its forms.
He notes that cancel culture can cause a similar push towards extremism – shutting people out of the herd, which is when they become dangerous. “It’s what I call Buffalo Syndrome,” he explains. “The most dangerous, attacky animals in Africa are male buffalos past the point where they can be the most dominant males in the herd. They get rejected by the females and they’re pushed out. They become incredibly dangerous. They’ll attack people, vehicles, buildings.
