The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) is eyeing the possibility of having its own mobile application that would allow voters to cast their votes in the May 2022 polls.
In her Twitter account, poll Commissioner Rowena Guanzon said four suppliers of the mobile app voting program or system offered to conduct a test run for the Comelec.
The poll official did not provide further details but she said poll watchdog groups such as the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting , the National Movement for Free Elections , and the Legal Network for Truthful Elections will be invited to observe and criticize during the testing. If successful, Guanzon said they will ask Congress to pass a law that would allow such a mode of voting.
Based on Section 28 of Republic Act No. 10590 “the Commission may explore other more efficient, reliable, and secure modes or systems, ensuring the secrecy and sanctity of the entire process, whether paper-based, electronic-based, or internet-based technology or such other latest technology available, for onsite and remote registration and elections and submit reports and/or recommendations to the JCOC.
Guanzon, meantime, asked the public to send in their comments on the mobile app voting via her e-mail address: commrguanzon@gmail.com. “@PPCRV_National send your comment to Mobile App voting project before feb 20 @COMELEC mga Kabababayan e-mail commrguanzon @gmail.com,” she said.
