ZAMBOANGA CITY —In the complex landscape of Philippine politics, the case of Sulu and its relationship with the BARMM reveals the nuanced interplay of political interests, sovereignty, and identity. As a native of Sulu and a professional invested in peacebuilding and humanitarian development, the discourse surrounding the region’s desire to opt-out of BARMM is of paramount significance.
However, the recent Supreme Court ruling on the validity of the referendum results—where Sulu registered a “NO” to joining BARMM—raises crucial questions. The court’s delayed acknowledgment of these results prompts inquiries into the political machinations that often plague governance in the Philippines.
