Lab tests on cancer cells have shown it was “unexpectedly effective” in treating glioblastomas
A cheap and widely available antidepressant has shown to be “unexpectedly effective” in treating aggressive brain tumours, scientists have said.
The findings, published in the journal Nature, raise hope for treating an aggressive disease, which currently has a survival time of just 12-18 months. Glioblastomas are the most common type of cancerous brain tumour in adults, with around 3,200 diagnosed a year in the UK. As part of the study, published in the journal Nature, the researchers tested hundreds of other existing medicines that are able to cross this barrier, such as antidepressants and Parkinson’s medication.
However, academics are advising against patients trying the drug for themselves without medical supervision.
