According to the NHS, osteoporosis weakens bones, making them fragile and more likely to break. The condition develops slowly over several years and is often only discovered when a fall or sudden impact causes a bone to break or fracture. About one in every two women and one in nine men over 50 will fracture a bone because of osteoporosis, and there are more than 500,000 fractures every year due to the condition, according to the charity Age UK.
