A study published in BMCMedicine finds that eczema and psoriasis in adults are associated with increased incidence of anxiety and depression. Part of this risk can be mediated through modifiable risk factors, including sleeping problems.

This study is based in part on data from the CPRD, obtained under licence from the UK Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency. The data are provided by patients and collected by the National Health Service as part of their care and support. The interpretation and conclusions contained in this study are those of the authors alone.

We are enormously grateful to all members of our Patient and Public Advisory Panel who have attended regular meetings and made invaluable contributions to the analysis and interpretation of this study based on their lived experience. This panel is represented by two authors who have reviewed and edited the manuscript. This study is funded by the NIHR Research for Patient Benefit Programme, PB-PG-0418-20025.

The secular trend of enterovirus A71 after the implementation of preventive measures in Taiwan - BMC Public HealthThe secular trend of enterovirus A71 after the implementation of preventive measures in Taiwan - BMC Public HealthBackground Enterovirus A71 (EV A71) is one of the most important enteroviruses related to morbidity and mortality in children worldwide. This study aimed to analyse the secular trend of EV A71 in Taiwan from 1998 to 2020 and to evaluate the effectiveness of infection control measures. Methods We collected the epidemiological data of EV A71 from disease surveillance systems in Taiwan. We analysed the association between the secular trend of EV A71 and preventive measures such as hand washing, case isolation, and suspension of classes. Results The incidence of enterovirus infections with severe complications (EVSC) decreased from 16.25 per 100,000 children under six in 1998 to less than 9.73 per 100,000 children under six after 2012 (P = 0.0022). The mortality rate also decreased significantly, from 3.52 per 100,000 children under six in 1998 to 0 per 100,000 children under six in 2020 (P | 0.0001). The numbers of EVSC and fatalities were significantly higher in the years when EV A71 accounted for more than 10% of the annual predominant serotypes (p | 0.05). After the implementation of many non-pharmaceutical interventions in 2012, the incidence of EVSC and mortality rate decreased significantly (p | 0.001). Conclusions After implementing active enterovirus surveillance and preventive measures, we found that the incidence of EVSC and fatalities due to EV A71 in Taiwan decreased significantly from 1998 to 2020. Continuous surveillance and strengthened infection control policies are still needed in the future.

Positive associations between sex hormones, bone metabolism and cognitive impairment in Chinese oldest-old females - BMC PsychiatryPositive associations between sex hormones, bone metabolism and cognitive impairment in Chinese oldest-old females - BMC PsychiatryPurpose With a rapid increase in older adults, progressive impairment in cognitive function has become an increasing concern owing to high social and economic burdens. The current study was designed to investigate the associations of sex hormones and bone metabolism with cognitive impairment (CI) in Chinese oldest-old females. Methods There were 396 oldest-old females from the China Hainan Oldest-old Cohort Study (CHOCS). Following standardized procedures, Mini Mental State Examination was effectively completed, and sex hormones and bone metabolism were assessed in these females. Results The median age of all females was 101 years (range: from 80 to 116). There were 340 females (86%) with CI. Participants with CI had significantly higher levels of age, progesterone, prolactin and estradiol than those without CI (P | 0.05 for all). Total type I collagen N-terminal elongation peptide [hazard ratio (HR): 1.018, 95%CI: 1.001–1.035] and prolactin (HR: 1.065, 95%CI: 1.005–1.129) levels were positively and significantly associated with CI (P | 0.05 for all). Conclusions Prolactin and total type I collagen N-terminal elongation peptide had positive associations with CI in Chinese oldest-old females. Thus, a balance in sex hormones and bone metabolism may have significant effects on cognitive function during the aging process.

Monocyte count is associated with the severity of human adenovirus pneumonia in hospitalized children aged less than 6 years - BMC Infectious DiseasesMonocyte count is associated with the severity of human adenovirus pneumonia in hospitalized children aged less than 6 years - BMC Infectious DiseasesBackground Human Adenovirus (HAdV) pneumonia is common in young children and infants. Overall, 7–8% of all viral respiratory illnesses among children for less than 5 years are induced by HAdVs. Unfortunately little is known about the role of monocyte count in the disease severity. Methods Data were gathered from 595 children (age | 6 years) who were diagnosed with HAdV infection at the 1st People's Hospital (Changde City, China) between January 2019 and December 2019. There were 181 cases of severe adenovirus pneumonia. Results The correlation between the patients' monocyte count and the severity of HAdV pneumonia was estimated by performing a multiple linear regression analysis. The results showed a negative association (OR: 0.53, 95% CI 0.31 to 0.89, P | 0.05). We further built Generalized Additive Models (GAMs) and demonstrated that the monocyte count had a non-linear association with severe HAdV pneumonia. The inflection point of monocyte count detected in the two-stage linear regression model was 1.5. On the left side of this point, the monocyte count was negatively interrelated (OR: 0.26, 95% CI 0.13 to 0.52, P | 0.001), while on the opposite side, there was a positive association (OR: 7.48, 95% CI 1.30 to 43.08, P | 0.05). Conclusions Based on the results of this investigation, we established a link between monocyte count and the severity of HAdV pneumonia. Monocyte count is negatively associated with severe HAdV pneumonia. The inflection point of monocyte count detected in the two-stage linear regression model was 1.5 × 109/L.
