Scotland's biggest city raced to the rescue to save the event after original hosts Victoria in Australia waved the white flag
Scottish Hockey have revealed their heartbreak after missing the cut to compete at the scaled-back Commonwealth Games heading to Glasgow in 2026.
Scotland's biggest city raced to the rescue to save the event after original hosts Victoria in Australia waved the white flag over spiralling costs. The reduced event will see hockey, squash and diving missing out with 2022 favourites triathlon, t20 cricket, rugby sevens and badminton off the menu. The return of the Commonwealth Games to Glasgow 12 years after its stunning success has been welcomed, however, the sports who have been left with a watching brief with diving a part of the itinerary since 1930. But the most emotive response came from those who carry a stick as Scottish Hockey didn't miss when reacting to their exclusion. Their CEO Derek Keir said: "We are deeply disappointed that hockey won’t feature in Glasgow 2026.
"Fundamentally we are so disappointed for our players, officials, and support staff who will miss out on the experience. Scottish Hockey is looking forward to an exciting year in 2025 with international teams participating at the top end of our sport. Our athletes, staff and officials are performing on the biggest stages in international hockey and we look forward to cheering them on as they proudly fly the flag for Scotland.
