Formula 500 driver Luke Nardini has been charged with manslaughter following a crash that occurred while he was allegedly driving on the wrong side of a US highway. His mother says her son is deeply saddened by the 'terrible' incident.

Local media outlets have reported that the crash occurred on a tight turn on Highway 84, south of San Francisco. A man died at the scene and the three others were taken to hospital, where a woman was also declared dead.Mr Nardini suffered a fractured lower vertebra and was also taken to hospital.US media outlets have reported that police do not suspect drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.

Mr Nardini had not been in the US for long and according to police was not familiar with the winding roads in the region.She said in a Facebook post that her said her son was deeply saddened by the "terrible" event."He wanted to relay to us that he is OK and is being treated well."Luke and his brother Jamie have competed in Formula 500 tournaments for more than 10 years.

"The whole community is feeling it and are trying to get behind the Nardini family in any way they can.""I know that Luke and the family are absolutely devastated in what's happened and the fact that it's happened," he said.Loading
