Two local maintenance workers are taking initiative to help their community during icy weather conditions.

Two maintenance workers, Howard Heffernan and Dan Dickinson, have launched a 'community gritting' service in Bury, Ramsbottom, and Radcliffe to help residents cope with icy weather. They have been tirelessly filling grit bins, clearing snow and ice from pathways, assisting drivers, and even making a school playground usable. Heffernan and Dickinson, who work for Heffernan Services, created a hotline to respond to community requests for assistance.

They have also helped with broken-down vehicles. Bury Council acknowledged their efforts, stating that they prioritize gritting major roads due to resource constraints. Heffernan explained that they decided to act because they had the skills and resources to make a difference. The pair have received donations from generous local businesses, including Beesley and Fildes and Travis Perkins, who provided discounts on materials and equipment
