Over £10,000 has been raised in one day to help a Belfast mum battling bowel cancer receive private treatment. Clare Symington, who is originally from West Belfast but now lives in Stonyford, received the devastating news she had bowel cancer in August 2022 after a year of constant pain and doctors appointments. The news floored the mum-of-two, with Clare and her husband Gary keeping the news to themselves for fear of 'burdening' their family and breaking the news to their young children, now aged 11 and 7.

Clare underwent major bowel surgery followed by chemotherapy, and soon more cancer was found in her liver, resulting in further surgery and extended chemotherapy. Almost a year to the day from Clare's original diagnosis, in August 2023, her treatment ended but "the worry and fear was never too far away", Neil said.
"That treatment has now ended and following five sessions of radiotherapy to help ease the pain over Easter, Clare has started yet another course of chemotherapy."
