The Prichard community gathered Saturday at The Barn bar for a benefit for an Eight Mile woman battling stage IV kidney cancer.

Vikki Thomas Southerland was diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma last September and it came as a complete shock to her family. The cancer spread to her lymph nodes and bones. After a setback in December with blood clots in her lungs, she has had a few hospital stays since then but is on track to recovery and healing.“We just appreciate what this community has done for us. They have stepped up and really showed a beautiful heart and we just appreciate it so much. Thank you all for being here. Thank you for donating your time, your resources and is going to really help her through this battle with cancer.
“We’ve all been touched by cancer some way and it’s just amazing that we have people with the heart, like we do. And we love Eight Mile. It is our home. It will always be our home. So, thank you, thank you guys,” Jones said. The event included a silent auction and fish plates were also being sold.
