The Crown Inn in Newcastle-on-Clun, Shropshire, secured a £270,000 government grant to be renovated and managed by the community after facing closure.
A 200-year-old pub in south Shropshire, saved from closure by its local community, is set for a major revamp. The Crown Inn in Newcastle-on-Clun was shut in January 2023, but the parish council secured a £270,000 government grant in December 2024, allowing them to purchase the pub and launch a community-led restoration project.
Henry Beddoes Architectural Design has been appointed to lead the renovation, which includes plans for a single-storey extension to create new toilet facilities and a versatile community room. The architects explain that the community room will be a valuable resource for various local groups, ranging from book clubs and music rehearsal spaces to arts and crafts workshops. The planning application is currently under review by Shropshire Council, with the aim of reopening the pub by late 2025. The Crown Inn has been a cornerstone of village life for over two centuries, providing food, drink, accommodation, and entertainment. Following its closure, the community rallied together, determined to retain its vital role in village life. The successful grant application marks a significant milestone in their endeavor to restore the pub to its former glory and ensure its continued presence as a hub for social interaction and community events
