The first-generation farmers made an ambitious 100-year plan to repair land stripped of vegetation with tree plantings and chemical-free regenerative practices.
Randal and Juanita Breen had no agricultural experience when they risked everything and quit their jobs to found Echo Valley Farm in 2014 — now they feed 80 families every week.
"It's a plan for healing our landscape, so regardless of whether we're here or not, the healing continues."But that is exactly how the couple's 263-hectare farm, in the Goomburra Valley on Queensland's Southern Downs, operates. "And then the other extreme is when we have seasons of abundance, when we're producing excess, they get to share in that reward as well."About five tonnes of what would have been food waste are collected from Brisbane every week from craft breweries, bakeries, and a fermenting company, to help feed their free-ranging pigs and cows.
" to get that organic matter up in the soil, get the trees back on the landscape and get people back on the landscape to reconnect with country and our food system."The organic movement was founded by philosopher and agricultural cooperatives leader Teruo Ichiraku, who had concerns about the dangers of chemicals used in farming.
