Amid the looming 300-percent increase in terminal fees at SM malls, a commuters’ rights group urged top transport officials to intervene and resolve the issue which could affect commuters, public transport drivers and operators nationwide.
The longstanding conflict, according to Komyut, forced some drivers to drop off their passengers outside the malls to avoid paying additional fees.
“Commuters face the burden of walking long distances, sometimes under the rain or sun. But instead of complaining against the drivers and operators, we are sympathizing with them after learning of their plight,” the group said.It also asked the Department of Transportation and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board to look into the matter and to introduce a policy that will resolve the issue.
According to the group, transport officials can compare terminal fees collected by PSI at SM malls with those of other private establishments or terminals. Komyut said that like oil prices, increasing terminal fees would also affect the public transport system, including commuters. “We, commuters, remind our authorities, public or private, that they should prioritize commuters in their programs and policies,” it added.
