Sky News Digital Editor Jack Houghton has criticised the ABC for conflating media reporting with racial abuse on social media.

Mr Houghton pointed to ABC News director Justin Stevens’ testimony at Senate Estimates this week as an example of the national broadcaster blaming journalists for the social media pile-on of presenter Stan Grant.“His argument is that individuals who work at the ABC should be immune from criticism, particularly the highly paid celebrity presenters at the ABC.“But if you are a young journalist at the start of your career and you wrote an accurate story about the complaints, Stevens blames you.

The Australian’s media writer Sophie Elsworth said the ABC was being hypocritical as the national broadcaster had previously directed social media abuse towards her by tagging her in negative tweets.
