Locals think the homes are being 'squeezed' onto the space
Concerns have been raised over plans to build new homes on the site of a Carlton pub's play park and green space. Plans have been put forward to Gedling Borough Council for two new homes on the land of The Elwes Arms, Oakdale Road, Carlton.
The plans involve two four-bedroom homes, both with driveways, to replace the play area and green space behind the pub. The homes would front on to Kensington Gardens. Residents feel the plans are ‘squeezing’ homes on to these spaces and question if it’s the best space for the homes. Tanya Harris, a receptionist, shared concern over the location of the new homes. The 36-year-old said: “I know there’s a need for housing but they will just put them anywhere. If the pub is affected that would be sad. I have no problem with new homes but is that the best place for it?”Another local resident, Jenny Whipps, 40, an associate director of a clinical trials company, told Nottinghamshire Live there’s concern over the green space as well as putting the homes on to the small space.
Jenny said: “Part of the problem is, with new homes, the loss of green spaces. Big houses, squeeze housing on to these spaces. It isn't necessarily great. I don’t like the idea of crowding as many houses as they can pack. I do see both sides to it.Another local resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said that they wouldn’t be surprised if the pub closes due to the cost of living and has homes built on it.
The resident said: “I think the pubs going to go eventually. I just think it’s inevitable. The pub used to be really popular, over the eight, nine or ten years it’s slowly gone down and down. We need more housing anyway. Going to see more with the cost of living crisis.”
