Buying New | Three residential buildings and a hotel on site of Visitation Academy
In 2014, developer Jim O’Hare sat down with Richard Griffin, Frederick’s economic development director, to talk about historical properties to renovate and infill opportunities to explore in the city.
Frederick’s Catholic boarding school for girls had a rich history and became a city landmark. During the Civil War, cloistered nuns took in and cared for soldiers wounded in the Battle of Antietam, while still running the school. While development was slowed by the pandemic, Building 1 opened in December, and all 10 units sold quickly. Construction on Building 2 started this month, with completion planned in early 2025. Two of the seven units in that building are under contract. The final building, with 10 units, has an opening planned in 2029.
O’Hare said target markets for the units include residents, empty nesters perhaps, who are downsizing from large single-family houses but still need storage. “The old Visitation convent was back, put to a creative new use,” he said. Plus, he said, the Smiths’ favorite restaurant, The Tasting Room, is just an eight-minute walk from their new home. His local barber is a four-minute walk away.
