What do former college ADs think about the current state of conference realignment? 'Conference commissioners got into competition about who could generate the biggest TV package ... and it’s put TV executives in charge of college athletics.'
The fact Notre Dame didn’t go in a conference. That they continued to stay outside of all of that was one of the biggest surprises. I thought there was a time — I can’t remember the year — but we had conversations with Notre Dame about the Big 12. I know the ACC did. I thought there was a possibility at that time that they would do something. They continue to be outside — which is their right — but I think they’d be better off being in a conference with other people.
But bottom line, if college football could take over TV and tell TV people what was going to happen and say ,“Here’s how we’re gonna do it” and do it regionally and keep kids in geographical areas where they didn’t have to travel so far and build kind of anMoney will always dictate things but it seems to me if there was an NFL type thing it would probably generate a lot more money and do a better job of putting people in geographical regions.Well, more travel . And travel can be expensive.
Some of the changes are for the better and some are more questionable. I think the longtime, hardcore college football fan has to be wondering right now where this is all headed and what’s going to happen.I think it’ll be fun for athletes. People complain about the travel. You’re going to have to go to the West Coast one time a year. Over the years, we went to the West Coast a number of times.
I’d rather be the traditionalist and go back to seeing some of that. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing. I’m just saying as a traditionalist, that’s what’s changed. But financially, it’s helped. Look where we are. Look what we’ve done. Look at the facilities we’ve built and the staffs we’ve put together and the experience for the fans, for that matter. It’s gotten better. It looks to me like the big schools, the bell cows, are going to the top.
But when you’re the commissioner of the SEC or the Big Ten, you don’t think of it that way. What is really best for you?’s Realignment Revisited series, digging into the past, present and future of conference realignment in college sports.
