Lawyer representing families of babies who were murdered or attacked says conspiracy theorists ‘should be ashamed of themselves’
are living in fear because of the growing interest in conspiracy theories about the case, a lawyer representing them has said.
In his opening statement, Mr Baker revealed that the families of Letby’s victims felt they had not been able to speak more openly about their experience because they are subject to a lifelong anonymity order. This had prevented the victims from being “humanised”, and they felt their grief had been reduced to a “ghoulish sideshow”, Mr Baker told the inquiry.
“What has society come to when the families of murdered children live in fear?” Mr Baker asked. He added that having sat through both of Letby’s two trials, the families had “no doubt” of her guilt.Peter Skelton KC, who is representing another group of families, said that the inquiry would need to examine the “denial, deflection and delay” that prevented Letby from being caught sooner.
But the families remained concerned over the comments made by some hospital executives and “their denials and deflections continue to cause pain”, he added. The period covers her spell at Countess of Chester from January 2012 to the end of June 2016, and also the work placements in Liverpool.Mr Skelton said another failure was not to inform the families that the deaths were being investigated with a view to finding out why they occurred.
