Rochester, N.Y. - The buildings that stand on the corner of South Clinton and East Main in Downtown Rochester have been in disrepair for decades, but a project
that started Friday hopes to transform them.
Construction began on Harper's Corner, a mixed-use building with commercial space and 11 affordable apartments."I remember when this corner was a bustling retail space slash bus terminal," said Rochester City Councilmember Michael Patterson. "It is my hope that we will continue to make this strong commitment to the steady, consistent renaissance of the City of Rochester."
The hope for the retail space is to uplift Minority and Women-Owned local businesses, a nod to the space's namesake, Martha Matilda Harper, who is credited with the invention of franchising. "After working as a maid for 25 years, immigrant Martha Matilda Harper revolutionized the beauty industry," said Shannon Ealy with the Rochester Chamber of Commerce. "All while helping other women gain financial empowerment."
Funding for the project comes from a portion of the city's Downtown Revitalization Initiative award from the state, as well as money from federal and state Historic Tax Credits.
