Sailors serving on board two new overseas-built Australian warships are being forced to drink bottled water as the Navy works to urgently fix a contamination problem linked to plumbing.
"Poor quality manufacture has led to pipes being contaminated, drinking water being contaminated and our sailors not being able to access safe drinking water," he told the ABC. "This issue manifested itself in 2021 and we were officially informed recently about this," Mr Conroy said. In 2017 the ABC revealed that Australia's two largest warships, also built by Navantia in Spain, had been hampered by engine problems connected to their propulsion systems. The discovery of "defects" on the Spanish vessels has emerged as the government prepares to respond to a long-awaited review of Navy's Surface Combatant Fleet which examined Australia's shipbuilding programs.
"I absolutely believe they could have been built in this country. Peter Dutton and the Liberals sending this work overseas was a dagger in the heart of several important naval shipbuilders," he said.
