The area surrounding the embassy in Nine Elms is now in lockdown and remains cordoned off as specialist police investigate and safely deal with the package. Civilians – many of whom were visiting the embassy to deal with passport and visa queries – were seen escorted from the embassy building after spending more than an hour and a half locked inside by the automatic security doors. Workers, meanwhile, remained inside.Firefighters stand near the US Embassy, amid ongoing investigation into a suspicious package , who carried out the detonation, said: “We’re aware of speculation online about an incident in the vicinity of the US Embassy in Nine Elms.

Labour MP for Battersea, Marsha de Cordova, said in a statement on social media: “I am in touch with local police regarding this incident in the vicinity of the US Embassy this morning. I will update as I receive more information.”
