Meghan Markle and Prince Harry aren't the only royal couple to have polarised the public

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle might currently be the most controversial royal couple currently on everyone’s lips following the release of Prince Harry’s explosive memoir, Spare, but history reveals that they are far from the only royal couple to ever have polarised the public.

It was seen as a sign of finally getting with the times and letting go of the institution’s colonialist past, while also offering a breath of fresh air into an otherwise stuffy and often stilted high society life. There was also some clear friction between Meghan and William’s own wife, Kate, something Harry also drew attention to during the interview as he said: "The idea of the four of us being together was always a hope for me. Before it was Meghan, whoever it was going to be, I always hoped that the four of us would get on. But very quickly it became Meghan versus Kate.”

During the damning chat, the couple accused the royal family of “systemic racism” with Prince Harry even claiming that a member of the family had "conversations with Harry about how dark [Archie's] skin might be when he's born”. Branded “the other woman” in Prince Harry’s own memoir, Camilla often faced backlash after rumours began to circulate that she was romantically involved with Charles, while he was still married to Princess Diana, and she was still married to Andew-Parker-Bowles.

She added: "I was scrutinized for such a long time that you just have to find a way to live with it. Nobody likes to be looked at all the time and, you know, criticized." Despite a solid ten year attempt to maintain their relationship, the couple’s marriage fell apart in 1992, with a divorce later being finalised in 1996.

Everything appeared to be ticking along smoothly for the first few years, until by the late 1980s cracks had begun to form in Anne’s fairytale marriage. Often regarded as a wild child in her youth, the young Princess initially fell in love with Peter Townsend—a married man who worked for her father when she was just 17.

In her most scandalous encounter to date, she was caught on camera canoodling with gardener Roddy Llewellyn, a man who was 17 years her junior.
