Chris Pettit, the ex-attorney who was sentenced last month to 50 years in federal prison for stealing millions of dollars from his clients, wants to dismiss his criminal defense lawyer and the court to appoint him new counsel. In court papers filed Monday, he says San Antonio criminal lawyer Matthew T. Allen “has failed to provide an adequate and reasonable defense.

Pettit appears to have used boilerplate court documents to make the requests. The motion-to-dismiss filing contains references to “appointed counsel.” He crossed out the word “appointed” in six instances where it appeared and and initialed each. Allen was hired by Pettit, not appointed by the court.

Robert Almonte II, a former assistant U.S. attorney who led the prosecution of Pettit before resigning to go into private practice, called the court filings “super odd” because of their timing. Generally, a motion to dismiss counsel would be filed before a trial, he said. “It doesn’t make a lot of sense from just some of the language in there,” he added.
