Stephen Mellor, who was jailed for 14 years for the murder of John Dookie, has urged teens not to follow in his footsteps.

A convicted killer has slammed the government for ‘continuing to invest in the same failures’ and says the UK needs ‘new ways’ of dealing with knife crime.

‘It’s now spreading to the suburbs and getting more attention but while the government continue to invest in the same failures it will always continue.‘We have the same problem spiralling out of control and getting worse, they need to look at new ways to deal with the issue because it is clearly not working and rapidly on the rise.’

In 1997, at the age of 18, gang member Stephen was involved in the bloodbath killing of John Dookie, 22, outside the Variety pub in Preston The Met Police are currently trying to recruit 3,000 officers, 1,500 of which are new posts, while the West Midlands Police force have introduced stronger stop and search powers for the first time in its history.

He said it has always been a problem, and continued: ‘It is just as easy to get knives now as we did before.
