The fact that every single celebrity was apparently terrible at cooking was hammered home for the entire episode

– are paired with an elite chef for mentoring, before facing off against each other. Besides their ubiquity, the contestants have in common a complete absence of skills in the kitchen – which they all loudly declare.present, and the premise promises an energetic, tense food fight. But in the first episode of the fourth series it was obvious the cast weren’t taking things seriously enough.pro Pasha Kovalev – going head-to-head to create mouthwatering dinner party centrepieces.

Given how terrible they all are at cooking was hammered home at every opportunity, I expected last night’s opener to feature some major – and entertaining – kitchen fails. But for the most part, the contestants did pretty well, and weren’t too upset when they didn’t win. Asked to create a black forest gateau in the final round, Pinero willingly accepted his fate. “Yeah, good day, man. It’s been lovely, though,” he said, barely managing a shrug. Which doesn’t make for an exciting competition.

This year’s celebrity cooks: Katherine Ryan, Harry Pinero, Carol Vorderman, Ellie Simmonds, Pasha Kovalev, Abbey Clancy, Christopher Biggins and Linford Christie Proceedings were interrupted with footage of the angsty-looking professional chefs with their flaming woks, and the liberally-deployed sound effect of a knife being sharpened. Yet the so-called stars’ attitudes suggested they weren’t that serious about winning. Former party girls Clancy and Vorderman were meant to be in a fierce battle, yet spent a large proportion of their screen time joking about drinking the fizz from Vorderman’s champagne sauce together.

Allen and Willis have easy charm, but they were totally overshadowed by Katherine Ryan, who didn’t even compete in this episode yet still managed to secure all the funniest gags from the sidelines. When Vorderman seemed unbothered by losing the first round, Ryan’s quip – “You got through a whole bottle of champagne earlier, I’m not surprised you’re having fun” – had everyone in stitches, including me. Next week, she’ll be feeling the heat in the kitchen.
