Coopers, a 100-year-old pub in Liverpool, is renowned for its lively atmosphere and welcoming regulars. The venue's success stems from its focus on personality and community, offering a unique experience where visitors can connect with others and enjoy live entertainment.
A good pub is never defined by its music, ale or location. If that were the case you'd be hard stretched to find one we could all agree on. However, tucked away in the shadows of Cases Street is a 100 year-old venue receiving world-wide attention because personality is currency. You'll hear Coopers long before you set eyes on it. If you've ever wandered through the city centre and heard the faint echoes of a Dolly Parton karaoke then you'll be in the vicinity.
Coopers is known to many as a lively, traditional pub that is never short of customers. Its regulars are care-free and will belt out a tune as they please while offering you their own seat for a moments respite. There are few places you can visit solo and walk away with a new pack of friends. Coopers is that and more for many people, some who use the venue as their only chance to speak to another human, but those values have been an integral part of the pub's history. Stephen Keegan joined the Coopers family as a singer after touring the North West in 1993. Now the pub's entertainment manager, the 60-old-started a now normalised trend for the city. He told the ECHO: 'Back then there was no live entertainment. It was all old men in flat caps and that's the way it was. You turned 60 and became an old man. It was a lot more prudish. After my first month the owners couldn't believe how much business the pub was getting because of live entertainment. We quickly spread by word of mouth and we were booming.' Maria Azzopardi, 63, is Coppers Townhouse's manager. She became a part of the furniture when she arrived for a trial shift as a barmaid in 1997 and was told to return everyday thereafter. Maria told the ECHO: 'We used to have a lot of banter even back then. It was me, Maria , and Stephen - that's it. I knew Stephen before I started here and it was him who told me they were hiring. It was the quickest interview of my life and I've been here sinc
