BREAKING: Cop who held George Floyd's legs as he died asks for charges to be dismissed
Thomas Lane, left, has applied for charges of aiding and abetting the murder of George Floyd to be dismissed
A police officer who held George Floyd’s legs and feet down as he died has applied for aiding and abetting charges murder against him to be dismissed. Former Minneapolis PD officer Thomas Lane’s lawyer Earl Gray say he did not know Floyd was being assaulted, and that he didn’t realize holding Floyd’s arms and feet was effectively aiding the black security guard’s murder.
Gray also cited a transcript of a bodycam which saw Lane ask his colleague Derek Chauvin whether they should have moved Floyd, who was handcuffed and laying on his stomach, onto his side. They said there is insufficient evidence to establish that the former Minneapolis Police Department cop committed a crime.
Lane’s attorney also cited unreleased bodycam footage of Floyd’s arrest as further evidence of Lane’s innocence. Transcripts of the conversation between Lane, 37, and his colleagues Derek Chauvin, Tou Thao and J Alexander Keung have been made available to the court as part of the application, WCCO reported.Floyd died in Minneapolis on May 25 after Lane’s former colleague Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck. Chauvin has been charged with murder.
Floyd was filmed gasping ‘I can’t breathe’ as Chauvin knelt on his neck for eight minutes 46 seconds. Floyd’s death sparked racial equality protests and riots across the US, and has become a rallying cry for ongoing Black Lives Matter protests against police brutality and racism.
