Cork Airport paid tribute to the six people who tragically lost their lives in the 2011 plane crash on its runway. On the 14th anniversary of the incident, the airport posted a heartfelt message online remembering those who perished and those injured on board the Manx2 flight from Belfast City Airport on February 10, 2011. The Manx2 flight, carrying 12 occupants including two crew members, descended towards Cork in foggy conditions shortly before 10 am.

The 19-seat aircraft made two unsuccessful attempts at landing before attempting a third. At this point, the crew lost control of the flight. The right wing scraped along the runway before the plane rolled over and crashed on the tarmac, landing upside down. The inverted aircraft continued to slide for another 189 meters before finally coming to a stop. Responding swiftly, members of the Airfield Fire Service managed to extinguish blazes in both engines before the flames could engulf the fuselage. Six passengers were fatally wounded, and survivors were urgently transported to Cork University Hospital (CUH). An inquest held in Cork in 2014 revealed that all six deceased victims died instantly or within moments of the impact. Survivors recounted their terrifying experiences, fearing the fire would reach the fuselage before it could be contained, fearing they would be consumed by flames. One survivor expressed their sincere gratitude towards the Gardai and fire crews who arrived at the scene, praising their heroic efforts. First responders on the scene quickly erected a tent to serve as a makeshift morgue. A final report on the crash in 2014 identified several contributing factors, including pilot fatigue and a sensor malfunction in one of the aircraft's engines. Martin McGuinness, then the Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland, revealed that he had originally planned to be on the Manx2 flight to visit Cork for the 2011 general election campaign but had changed his travel plans at the last minute. More recently, in July, an investigation was launched into a 'near-miss' incident involving two aircraft at Cork Airport.
