Cornwall Council celebrates success of food waste collection scheme as it reaches final area. Residents share mixed experiences with new system.

Leaders at Cornwall Council have declared that over 10,000 tonnes of food waste have been collected since they introduced dedicated caddies for kitchen waste last year. Next month, Cornwall's revamped household waste system will be launched in the final area, Mid West Cornwall, encompassing Truro, Falmouth, Redruth, and Camborne. The new system involves weekly food waste collection, while 'black bag' rubbish bins and recycling sacks and boxes are emptied on alternate weeks.

Newquay and St Austell were among the first areas to transition to this new system. Black 180-litre wheelie bins or seagull-proof sacks, coupled with smaller green food waste bins, are used in the scheme. The initiative aims to minimize the amount of non-recyclable trash, and Cornwall Council's portfolio holder for Neighbourhoods, Carol Mould, expressed satisfaction with the county's recycling rate increasing from 34% to 44% this year. 'Our recycling rates are improving significantly, and when we complete the rollout, we should reach the 50% or 51% target,' she stated. 'It's remarkable how much additional recycling we achieve once people understand that they have a designated bin; it does increase. 'It's absolutely fantastic, and people also realize how much food waste they discard, so hopefully, it encourages everyone to think 'hey ho, not so much waste'.'However, not everyone embraces the new system. Penzance adopted it in July, with resident David Curnow voicing confusion regarding the new regulations. 'It's just my wife and myself, and we struggle to get everything right; our black bag bins are overflowing,' he lamented. Ian Inch, residing nearby, remarked: 'With fortnightly collections, you don't have much choice but to recycle more. I feel like we're being forced into it. 'I'm adapting to food recycling bags, but they do tear, and it becomes rather smelly with bin juice.' Lisa Colenso offered a more positive perspective: 'It's alright. I like the food bins; we definitely throw out less stuff because of them. It's better for the environment, and less goes to landfill.' As the new system was deployed in various areas, some residents encountered challenges. Last to receive the new service, Mid West Cornwall, stretches from Camborne in the west to Probus in the east, Falmouth in the south, and Perranporth in the north. Cllr Carol Mould acknowledged that this was the 'most challenging area' but added: 'Hopefully, the bumps in the road we encountered with the other four rollouts we can smooth out here. ' 'It's a significant challenge, but once it's done, we're done, and Cornwall will be completely equipped with food waste collection, and we will be firmly on our way ahead of the Mid West Cornwall launch date in early March.
