This article explores the chilling legacy of Richard Hillman, one of Coronation Street's most memorable villains.
Coronation Street has been on our TV screens for more than 60 years - and one of the show's most iconic characters in that time has been Richard Hillman. Serial killer Richard, played by Brian Capron, appeared in the soap between 2001 and 2003 and made quite an impression. He first arrived in Weatherfield for the funeral of Alma Baldwin. Richard quickly befriended Gail Platt, and the pair began a romantic relationship before eventually tying the knot.
However, there was another side to Richard, and his exploits on the Street included leaving his business partner Duggie Ferguson to die after a fatal accident and murdering his ex-wife Patricia with a shovel. He also swindled his neighbours Jack and Vera Duckworth out of their life savings in an investment scam, and kidnapped Norris Cole. Richard plotted to kill his mother-in-law Audrey Roberts by setting her house on fire and killed her co-worker Maxine Peacock with a crowbar. He also tried to kill Emily Bishop and then framed Sarah Platt’s ex-boyfriend Aiden Critchley for the crimes. Eventually, Richard confessed his crimes to Gail and left Coronation Street suddenly in February 2003. He returned a few weeks later with a homicidal plan and abducted Gail and her kids. Richard drove off with his captive step-family in a Ford Galaxy, plunging it into a canal, but while his family members survived, Richard drowned. The Richard Hillman storyline was voted and featured in Channel 4's 100 Greatest Scary Moments in 2003, ranking at 32nd place. Capron's portrayal of Richard helped him earn Best Actor, Best Exit and Villain of the Year at the British Soap Awards in 2003. He was also nominated for Most Popular Newcomer at the National Television Awards in 2002 and Most Popular Actor in 2003
