Helen Worth, best known for her role as Gail Platt on Coronation Street, has bid farewell to the long-running soap opera after her character experienced a life-threatening health scare.
Coronation Street legend Helen Worth has quit her iconic role as Gail Platt in the show after her character suffered a dramatic health event. The news that Helen, 73, was to leave the long-standing soap was confirmed back in June. At the time the actress said: 'This year felt like the perfect time to leave the show after celebrating 50 years in the most wonderful job on the most wonderful street in the world.
I made the decision at the start of the year and spoke to the producers, who were very kind and understanding.' While Helen's final episode will air this evening, December 25, her last scenes in the soap were filmed some weeks ago - meaning the actress has already well and truly quit the popular ITV programme. Gail's departure comes after the character had a heart attack. As viewers will know, Gail had a heart attack leading to a near-fatal cardiac arrest in an episode that aired back in October. Thankfully, medics were able to save Gail by performing a stent insertion to clear a blocked artery. Of her departure, Helen added: 'I have been truly blessed to have been given the most incredible scripts week in and week out and to have worked with fantastic actors, directors, and a brilliant crew. The past 50 years have flown by, and I don't think the fact that I am leaving has quite sunk in yet.
