Coronation Street sees a wave of departures as Helen Worth and Sue Cleaver leave the iconic soap, and Sue Devaney faces a heartbreaking storyline.
Coronation Street has started the year with a string of departures that began in December with the exit of soap legend Helen Worth . Fans of the ITV soap know that the actress decided to leave the show after celebrating 50 years playing Gail Platt . Helen shared a statement last summer confirming the news before her exit aired during Corrie's Christmas Day episode.
Her final scenes showed Gail leaving Weatherfield for a new life in the south of France after marrying her sixth husband, Jesse Chadwick - her seventh wedding during her time on the famous street. Meanwhile, Sue Cleaver has also announced her plans to say goodbye to Weatherfield after 25 years in the role of Eileen Grimshaw. She said: 'I've had 25 privileged years of working on Coronation Street. The door is still firmly open, but as I reached my 60th year I decided it was time to embrace change, look for new adventures and live fearlessly.' Her exit will come shortly after that of her on-screen frenemy Gail Platt. Helen Worth was seen bowing out of the long-running soap on Christmas Day after spending 50 years in the iconic role of the Platt matriarch. There have also been rumours that Sue Devaney has been let go from the show as Debbie Webster. While Corrie doesn't comment on future storylines, Sue, who has played the character on and off for four decades, is expected to be at the centre of a devastating storyline which will see her character diagnosed with dementia. A source told the Metro: 'It’s one of the show’s biggest storylines of the year, and a real chance for Sue to finally get her time in the spotlight – it will just be devastating for fans that it will effectively be her final storyline’ a source told us. It’s one of many major storylines new boss Kate Brooks has in the bag, and there will not be a dry eye in the house
