High debt levels in the North of England and Wales leave people ill-prepared for the post-Covid economic downturn, according to research from the Centre for Cities. Mapping debt levels in England and Wales, the research found that people in large cities and towns in the north and in Wales have the highest levels of debt relative to their income and would be hit hardest by a recession. On average, for every £5 people earn in Warrington, Swansea, Sunderland and Wigan, they owe around £1.
