Ohio has seen Black Lives Matter protestsAn Ohio state senator has been sacked from his job as an emergency doctor after asking whether “African Americans or the coloured population” have been disproportionately affected by coronavirus because they “do not wash their hands as well as other groups”.
Republican Steve Huffman had asked the question during a health hearing on whether to declare racism a public health crisis. The US has seen massive Black Lives Matter protests in the wake of the death in police custody of African American George Floyd. Huffman asked: “Could it just be that African Americans or the coloured population do not wash their hands as well as other groups? Or wear a mask? Or do not socially distance themselves? Could that be the explanation for why the higher incidence?"
He later apologised, saying:"Regrettably, I asked a question in an unintentionally awkward way that was perceived as hurtful and was exactly the opposite of what I meant."Article share tools
