Each of the four Aboriginal women examined in a months-long inquest were killed by their partners, who each had long histories of violence and prior stints in prison.

The Northern Territory's Corrections Commissioner has detailed a $63 million plan to improve the territory's prison system, as the coroner investigates the deaths of four women — killed by men who had previously been jailed for domestic violence.

Commissioner Varley said more than half of the territory's prison population were behind bars over domestic violence offences, and 87 per cent were Indigenous. "I could give another 50 or 60 officers a job tomorrow, if I could get them through the door," Commissioner Varley said.Northern Territory Police will begin implementing a new approach to domestic and family violence in response to a months-long inquest into the deaths of four women at the hands of their partners.

The inquest previously heard a panel of experts had bid for $180 million over five years, as a "bare minimum" to bring change to the system, but the NT government's 2023 budget committed $20 million over two years to the plan.
