Founder and Principle Mediator, Bayside Mediation Dianne Loveday says that the cost of living pressures has led to an increasing number of separated couples living under the same roof even after ending their relationship.
“On top of that, our clients are noticing record high rents and record low vacancy rates and they’re choosing to stay together under the one roof until they can negotiate their financial settlements.”
However, Ms Loveday warns that proving separation can be challenging when living together, as the Family Law Act requires a couple to be separated for 12 months before applying for a divorce, necessitating proof of separate beds, managing finances independently, and not spending the majority of time together as a family.
