The Mill Field and its swimming area have been at the centre of community life in Chalbury since 1894 However, sewage now means locals are being warned against taking a dip in the River Evenlode for their own safety 💧 CapurrodDaniel reports
“It’s not the sort of biological desert that we might think of,” said Ms Miller, adding “I don’t want people to feel frightened of the river as being a place where it’s not safe, but equally I can’t in all conscience say there’s no risk attached to going swimming.”
The meadow on the River Evenlode, a tributary of the Thames, has long been at the heart of town life. Ms Miller blames the spread of small but numerous housing developments and a lack of corresponding investment in sewage treatment capacity.
