A study reveals that dextromethorphan, a common over-the-counter cough syrup ingredient, may be effective in treating lung fibrosis, a serious condition with no cure.
European Molecular Biology Laboratory scientists were part of a collaborative effort to discover an effective treatment for lung fibrosis. They found that dextromethorphan, a common over-the-counter ingredient in many cough syrups, may be a promising candidate. The study, published in Science Translational Medicine, showed how dextromethorphan can impede the collagen that forms scars inside cells, reducing lung fibrosis.
Lung fibrosis, caused by an excess amount of scarring from fibrillar collagen accumulation in the lung, most often occurs in older adults due to environmental irritants, chemotherapy, serious lung diseases, or autoimmune diseases. Fibrotic scarring causes lung tissue stiffness, leading to breathing difficulties and reduced oxygen concentration, ultimately resulting in organ failure. The World Health Organization estimates that 761,000 people in its European region suffer from lung fibrosis, with 25,000 deaths and 496,000 healthy years lost due to the condition. Muzamil Majid Khan, EMBL research associate and the paper's first author, said, 'After learning that lung fibrosis has no cure available, I wanted to discover novel drugs for this condition.' Knowing the challenge of developing new drugs, Khan and the team decided to explore drugs that are already approved and readily available. EMBL scientists screened a library of FDA-approved drugs, including dextromethorphan
