There are no easy solutions out there right now to solve the issues that many cities have, including Cleveland, when it comes to recruiting new police officers.

Kalamazoo , Michigan Police have a unique Safety Department in that everyone on the team works as an officer, a fireman and in E.M.S. The fast paced department has helped with recruiting. CLEVELAND , Ohio - That depends on who you ask. In Cleveland , not so much, but in Kalamazoo Michigan, the non-traditional is working.

The department is set up in a way to brings variety to the job, In other words you’re not a police officer, you’re not a fire fighter, you’re not with E.M.S.One day you could be fighting a fire and the next you could be called out to a breaking and entering, or maybe a wreck on the highway.Sgt.

Also, they have developed what they believe is a faster track to positions in a number of specialized departments like SWAT, forensics and K-9 officer opportunities.The question, of course, is there any way to move public safety, in a city like Cleveland, to the Kalamazoo model?Drummond told 19 News in a statement:
