Bill Simmons suggests that Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie is a potential buyer for the Boston Celtics, citing Lurie's connections to Massachusetts and interest in purchasing a major sports franchise.
It's the fourth time under billionaire owner Jeffrey Lurie’s stewardship that the Eagles have made the Super Bowl , but according to reports, Lurie may have his eyes on another prize beyond a second Lombardi. According to American sportswriter and podcaster Bill Simmons, the 73-year-old Eagles owner could be in the mix to buy the Boston Celtics.
Simmons revealed on his podcast that Lurie was one of a handful of prospective buyers who made it to the first round of bidding for the historic franchise. He also highlighted Lurie’s deep ties to Massachusetts, having attended Clark University, Boston University, and Brandeis University in the state. This isn't Lurie's first foray into attempting to purchase a prominent sports team. Two years before buying the Eagles from Norman Braman for $185 million in 1995, he tried to acquire the New England Patriots from James Orthwein but ultimately dropped out, leaving the franchise to be sold to Robert Kraft. While Simmons' report is certainly intriguing, he has been known to make inaccurate predictions about the sports world in the past. The Celtics were put up for sale last June following their record 18th NBA championship. The Grousbeck family has owned the team since 2002, paying $360 million – at the time the highest price ever paid for an NBA team. The plan is to sell 51 percent of the franchise now and the remaining 49 percent in 2028, with Wyc Grousbeck hoping to remain as the franchise's governor until a full sale has gone through. Reports indicate the Celtics were expecting to receive at least four bids from investment groups vying to purchase the team. It's currently unclear if Eagles owner Lurie made it into the final round of bidding. What is clear, however, is that whoever buys the Celtics – the most successful franchise in NBA history – will need substantial financial resources. The Celtics are currently the fourth-most valuable team in the NBA, trailing only the Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks, and Los Angeles Lakers. Analysts believe the team should command a premium price given its strong brand identity, recent success, and the lucrative new NBA TV deal worth $76 billion over the next 11 years. After the first round of bids, the Celtics will narrow down the group to two finalists, which is expected to happen sometime in February. The final bids will then be submitted, with a new owner likely to be announced within the next few months.
