Heparin therapy delays Alzheimer's diagnosis by one to two years, offering potential insights into new protective treatments. Large-scale health records show a promising association between the anticoagulant and delayed dementia onset.

By Priyanjana Pramanik, MSc.Reviewed by Susha Cheriyedath, M.Sc.Oct 10 2024 New research reveals that patients receiving heparin therapy were diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease up to two years later, suggesting a possible protective effect of this common anticoagulant.

Recent research suggests that the risk of developing Alzheimer’s may be influenced by a specific protein called Apolipoprotein E , which interacts with molecules on cell surfaces known as heparan sulfate proteoglycans . ApoE binds to HSPGs with varying affinity, depending on the ApoE variant.

About the study Heparin is commonly used to prevent blood clots in medical procedures like heart surgery and dialysis, which adds a broader context to its potential protective effects in Alzheimer's The analysis involved comparing the age at which patients were diagnosed between the two groups, those receiving heparin and those without, after accounting for factors such as related medical conditions, the number of hospital visits, sex, and age.

The results indicated that heparin treatment was linked to a later diagnosis of Alzheimer’s in both groups, with the effect seen across men and women. This supports the idea that heparin may act as a competitive inhibitor of ApoE binding to HSPGs, delaying disease diagnosis.

Trauma exposure accelerates brain aging which can lead to Alzheimer's disease, study suggestsTrauma exposure accelerates brain aging which can lead to Alzheimer's disease, study suggestsAs the median age of our population rises, so does the number of people diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. With advances in technology, it's easier to determine brain age and identify blood-based Alzheimer's disease biomarkers. A new study links trauma exposure with brain age blood markers of risk for Alzheimer's disease.
