Can you image Charles Leclerc in a Haas? 📝Formula_Nerds F1
Leclerc was contracted with the Ferrari Driver Academy during his junior category time in 2016. It was rumoured that if he won the GP3 championship, he would join Haas in Formula 1 in 2017. Günther Steiner explains why things turned out differently.
Even though Leclerc won the GP3 championship in 2016, he did not follow the path of Valtteri Bottas. The Finn skipped the GP2 championship at the time and started directly in Formula 1. Leclerc raced in Formula 2 in 2017 and won the title there. He then was contracted to Sauber in Formula 1 in 2018. “Because you train the driver and then when or if he’s a good driver, when he gets good, you move him on. So, in the end, you are nothing else than a proving ground for a big team.
“It’s difficult to see in FP1, the clever drivers, the really fast ones, they do not do anything over the top because they don’t want to take any risk. They are aware of this because the worst thing for a junior driver who gets into F1 is to crash out in one of these FP1 sessions. Because people will always remember that.
