Marks & Spencer Home, Boots, Shoe Zone, and WH Smith all used to be on the street

Hopes have been raised that a "neglected" Nottingham shopping street will make a comeback after the addition of a big-name fashion brand and progress on the former Broadmarsh shopping centre. Lister Gate in Nottingham city centre has been left sparse after a series of shop closures, including Marks & Spencer Home, Boots, Shoe Zone, and WH Smith, which have been mostly been attributed to the closure of the Broadmarsh centre in 2021.

As well as the opening of a new shop, Nottingham City Council recently issued an update on the progress of the transformation of the former Broadmarsh Centre site, which outlined that work on the Green Heart project was due to start at the end of this year. Construction is currently finishing on the public pathways and spaces which will connect the area to the Green Heart, which would be a wildlife-rich open space with seating.

“It’s really great news to see Flannels deciding to move in. This, among other positive moves such as the awaited Green Heart scheme nearby, is helping to generate more and more interest in the Lister Gate area.” John Kells, 67, from Radford, said: "I think this area is starting to get going again after the last few years when everything emptied and became run down. We'll have to see if Broad Marsh and this new shop can build some momentum in this part of the city."

East Midlands Chamber, which represents businesses in the region, saw the plans for the new clothing store and the upcoming start of work on the Green Heart as a sign of the area's potential. Chief executive Scott Knowles said: “A well-known brand deciding to open a new shop in Lister Gate should help reignite some confidence for businesses already located in, or exploring opportunities to invest in, Nottingham city centre after its struggles in recent years.
