Mark Farrell wants San Franciscans to know that he’s just like them — and different from every other candidate for mayor.
Farrell enters a contest that already includes Breed, Supervisor Ahsha Safai, and philanthropist Daniel Lurie. More might come, as a clear progressive candidature has yet to enter the race. San Francisco is not alone among cities small and large in its police staffing woes. Cities like Seattle have offered big bonuses to attract new hires, as have cities in the Bay Area. Breed has also pointed to improvements in the number of academy classes and new recruits brought in by the department.
While San Francisco mirrors the national trend, Farrell refuses to allow San Francisco to measure itself against other cities. The same can be said for the pace of The City’s economic recovery. Other cities, particularly those with significant tech sectors, have seen a similarly sluggish return to work after the COVID-19 pandemic. San Francisco slots just above San Jose in return-to-work metrics, according to the most recent analysis released by the Controller’s Office.He also wants to offer not-yet-detailed tax incentives that would encourage companies to bring workers back in person to downtown San Francisco.
