Is there life out in the cosmos? The James Webb Space Telescope will soon perform follow-up observations of an alien world that may harbor life.
Many scientists worldwide now think it’s a matter of when, not if, we find alien life in outer space.
Different types of chemicals in the planet’s atmosphere absorb different wavelengths or colors of the star’s light. So, by determining the colors missing in the starlight, astronomers can find which atoms and molecules are in the planet’s atmosphere. Moreover, Webb’s infrared instruments can pick up chemical fingerprints not detectable in visible light.
Importantly, the potential discovery of life on the exoplanet K2-18b – 120 lightyears away from Earth – hasn’t hit a complete roadblock. They also believe the DMS signal discovered by the University of Cambridge scientists overlaps too much with methane, and we cannot say whether it is there based on last year’s readings. However, using a different Webb instrument, follow-up observations could tell us more very soon.
