Litter-strewn streets, crumbling public buildings and fountains full of pigeon poo - they are all sights we have become depressingly used to since Nottingham went 'bankrupt'. But how much has this affected the Christmas spirit?
When he heard Nottingham City Council would not be providing a tree or decorations for the precinct, Ainsley Atkinson-Want took matters into his own hands. The 29-year-old, who grew up in The Meadows, sourced two of his own trees and spent Wednesday evening in the torrential rain placing two trees in the Bridgeway Centre and returning "Christmas spirit" to the area.
“It’s quite a sad thing, other areas have them. It’s mainly for kids, there’s not many things for them to do in the area. The area’s always been neglected, especially in recent years.
