Ards North Down Council fear disintegrating harbour could lead to a collapse in the main coastal road

A council is weighing up its options over how to deal with a privately owned harbour on Strangford Lough which is considered a potential safety hazard.

At the recent meeting of the Place and Prosperity Committee, Councillor Boyle and Alderman McAlpine after the debate withdrew the motion to prepare another more ameliorating proposal with other parties. “This process is moving forward. In some ways it is progress from what had previously been a prolonged period of no conversation, in other words a form of standoff had been created. There appears to be a grouping quite keen to progress the project to the betterment of Kircubbin.”

She said: “Everybody knows this is the main road down the peninsula, and if it is not working nobody is going anywhere. Very worrying. said the wall beside the road is the supporting wall, and that is Okay. But it is the inner walls that are close to the water. The question is what do we do from here on in?”

Lord Mayor, DUP Councillor Jennifer Gilmour said: “What I have heard raises some alarm bells given we don’t own the land, and the land owner hasn’t engaged yet in the process willingly to indicate he is happy to work with us. I know there is a suggestion through a third party there have been some hearsay indications.

The committee director told elected representatives: “This harbour is owned by a private individual, or one of his companies. We have had absolutely no contact from the owner, to say they would be happy with doing any sort of survey on their land, or that they were, as we have been advised, going to gift it to the council. So to go forward that would need to be sorted.
