Council's planning focus on housing needs

Rossendale Council is seeking to get more affordable homes for rent and to lower the maximum selling price that can be charged, to better-reflect local wages and property prices.

A new report for Rossendale's cabinet says national affordable homes policy from the previous government allowed households with incomes up to £80,000 to be eligible for affordable housing. And the maximum house price allowed to be charged is £250,000 for certain types of ownership. The council's current local plan, adopted in 2021, includes a policy on 'appropriate affordable housing' and commits the council to produce more details and guidance, including on different tenures. There is particular need for homes to rent, representing 70 per cent of needs, it says. So the local plan seeks a higher rate of homes to rent.
